New Gizmo on its Way and Where Do I Find...

It has been a totally non-beading evening. Long and mentally intense work day today and I just don't have any creative oomph in me tonight.

I am looking forward to receiving a new gizmo - I've bought some metal tags and the stamping tool from Infinity Stamps has been shipped. I'll post about my success or lack thereof with it once I've tried it out.

Now that I might have one or two readers who are more bead supply savvy, I'm still looking for a very specific type of stringing cable that's eluding me. A couple years ago I bought a necklace at Nordstroms designed by Dabby Reid. The beads are 'floated' with crimps along a chain/wire/cable/?? thing. It's not like any of the stringing material or jewelry cable I've purchased to date. It comes in a variety of colors, too. It looks a lot like twisted silk, feels very metallic but is pretty flexible. I'd love to know where I can buy this product, heck, I'd just like to know what to call it.

If you know, won't you leave a comment and point me to a way to buy it, if it's out there for sale?

Maybe colored SoftFlex? frex http://www.shorinternational.com/BeadWire.htm -- result of random Google search; have never used Softflex or bought anything from this company. The actual SoftFlex page is at http://www.softflexcompany.com/ , but the first URL has a handy gauge/color chart that's a bit easier for overviews.

Yep, tried that - just not the same. The stringing material has no coating on it, the SoftFlex has a nylon sheath over it.

I'm pretty convinced it's not available to the general public somehow.

Nipped into Nordstrom's today to check out their current Dabby Reid pieces, and I'd say they're strung on beading chain. Looks like a good selection of colors at http://www.fusionbeads.com/shop/searchresults.php?searchtext=beading+chain&subsearch=%3E (again, semi-random Google result; iirc I've never bought stuff from them). The place where I usually buy my sterling parts, halsteadbead.com, calls theirs "stringing chain" but only has it in gold-filled and sterling, at least in that particular snake-chain pattern; they do have some other submillimeter chains in other metal combos, but in a more open-link style.

Hi again Wombat! That looks like a very likely candidate! I'll get some and test it out.

Did you enjoy your trip to Nordstroms? I have to stay away or I regret it (well, my pocketbook anyway).

I can't remember when was the last time I actually bought anything at Nordstrom's-- at least ten years ago? Most of my clothing is from thrift stores, with exceptions for new stuff (shoes, socks, underwear) from consolidators (TJ Maxx etc.) or sometimes Target. The main shopping pitfall I have to watch for is beads-- there's another gem show in San Mateo over Thanksgiving weekend, but luckily I'll be out of town on the usual holiday visits. I've definitely got to start selling off some of my less-used beadage before it (further) takes over the wombatcave.

We need to meet up at one of those shows - I'll be busy over Thanksgiving as well, sadly not at LaCon as a vendor *sigh*, but happily here with my daughter and her SO and my husband.

Anyway, maybe you can show me around the next local show and keep me from making dumb buys?

The next bead/gem show in San Mateo probably won't be until next spring, but hopefully that'll leave lots of time for schedule coordination until then.

(And if you have a tax ID that'll get us into the wholesale section, I may follow you around like a small puppy. Most of my buying is from online suppliers who don't nec'ly require tax IDs, but the big shows are still great for giving overviews of new materials and pricing/design trends etc.)

We are at the San Mateo show, if you'd like to stop by in person to see our colored beading wire. Although I see that you were seeking out something entirely different. :)
